Wiesbaden (31.08.2020) - Beim diesjährigen Festival Il Cinema Ritrovato, das vom 25. bis 31. August in Bologna stattfand, wurde die DVD/Blu-ray-Veröffentlichung des Stummfilm-Zweiteilers DAS INDISCHE GRABMAL mit dem DVD Award in der Kategorie Best Rediscovery of a forgotten Film ausgezeichnet.

Jury-Präsident Paolo Mereghetti begründet die Entscheidung wie folgt:

It is the film that Fritz Lang wanted to make in the early 1920s and which was "snatched" from him by producer Joe May, who was so fascinated by Thea von Harbou's novel that he also wanted to direct it after Lang had proposed him to produce it. Unsellable for years, unlike Richard Eichberg's 1938 version and Lang's 1959 version, May's The Indian Tomb, like the later versions, is divided into two parts and already boasts an excellent production level capable of restoring the magical atmosphere and disturbing story imagined by von Harbou where the European way of thinking and acting collides with that of the most mysterious India. The DVD is also accompanied by a 28-page booklet that traces its history, unfortunately only in German, as is the film that has the original captions without subtitles. This inevitably limits its desirable wide circulation.

Herausgegeben wurde die Edition anlässlich des cinefest 2018: Meister des Weimarer Kinos – Joe May und das wandernde Bild von CineGraph und Bundesarchiv in Zusammenarbeit mit der Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung (Produktion und Vertrieb durch AV Visionen). Der monumentale Abenteuerfilm sollte 1921 „Der Welt größter Film!“ werden. Er entstand auf Basis eines Romans von Thea von Harbou, die auch zusammen mit Fritz Lang das Drehbuch verfasste. Die monumentale Produktion von Regisseur und Produzent Joe May zeigt Mia May und Conrad Veidt in den Hauptrollen.
